Consecutive Interpretation

Consecutive interpretation is characterized by ‘stop and go’ flow of conversation. The speaker will speak first and then stop for the interpreter to do interpretation. When the interpretation is finished, the speaker will continue to speak. In this case, the speaker shall take the initiative to stop after saying each coherent block of information (usually one or two sentences) so that the interpreter can interpret for him/her. Good coordination between the speaker and interpreter allows for the highest accuracy in interpretation.

Consecutive interpretation is optimal when it is important for everyone to hear clearly, when there are not many participants or when there are high consequences for misinterpretation. Consecutive interpretation is adopted in most cases, including but not limited to, arbitration interpretation, court hearing interpretation, business negotiation interpretation, exhibition interpretation, medical diagnosis interpretation, escort interpretation, investigation interpretation, corporate meeting interpretation, phone interpretation, press release interpretation, seminar interpretation, training course interpretation and witness statement interpretation, etc.

As the speaker has to stop for the interpreter to do interpretation, the duration of the event shall usually become doubled as compared with simultaneous interpretation is used.

Simultaneous Interpretation

Simultaneous interpretation (SI) is characterized by the speaker and interpreter ‘speaking at the same time’. During SI, the interpreter interprets as and when the speaker speaks. There is no need for the speaker to stop for interpretation.

In an event where the speech needs to be transmitted in one or several different languages as quickly as possible, SI should be employed. It is a perfect way for government or corporate conferences where there is a big pool of attendees and it is necessary not only to convey the speech in a new language, but also to preserve the speaker’s emotion.

Due to the importance of speed and accuracy in SI, the interpreters are usually more experienced with higher interpretation skills. Asiastar has a pool of experienced interpreters ready to deliver exceptional simultaneous interpretations.

Special equipment is required for the purpose of conducting simultaneous interpretation. Such equipment usually includes interpreter booth (to ensure the attendees can hear the interpretation clearly), microphone and stand, transmitter, monitor unit, receiver with headsets, interpreter headphone and the necessary cables.

Our Interpreter Selection Procedures

A good interpreter should be able to react to the speech content with alacrity and choose the right wording instantly. Asiastar has a strict procedure in place to select the qualified interpreters.

1. Upon getting inquiry from our clients, we will search our database and list those interpreters meeting the following requirements: 1) graduate from a recognized educational institution; 2) having years of interpretation experience in the language pair required;

2. Short-listing those interpreters with domain knowledge of the topic or event;

3. Checking record of pervious jobs the interpreter has worked with us. Only those interpreters marked with “Excellent”, “Good” or “Would continue to use” will be used for the interpretation task.
